Stewardship?

Why should money be set aside for perpetual stewardship? It's a good question, and one that is central to our being responsible caretakers for this and all other properties.

When the land trust becomes the owner of a particular piece of land, it becomes our responsibility from that time until "forever" to care for the land. This stewardship includes planning for protection of the fee lands, maintaining trails and parking areas, and cleaning up storm damage. We also make an annual payment to the Town in lieu of taxes.

However, the future is unknown, and it is vital to have money set aside for stewardship of the land in the future.

When the 40 acre Strawson property on the Basin was offered for sale, it also included 98' of frontage on Dyer's Harbor. Although the Harbor is  beautiful, it is not part of the Basin protection focus area that was our motivation for purchasing the property.

Therefore VLT decided to sell that harbor access, along with 2.33 acres of land across the road adjacent to the Basin Preserve. Selling this small lot in an existing neighborhood will not affect our goal of protection for the Basin and will also provide some of the funds needed to care for the Basin and all our preserves in  perpetuity.

Sale of the property is being handled by Kris Davidson, Broker, at Davidson Realty (207-863-2200) or info@davidson-realty.com. If you want to support the work of VLT and own land adjacent to the Basin Preserve, here's your chance!
